As of September 10th 1990, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority ( IANA ) granted the National Academy of Sciences the (Top Level Domain -TLD) .cr for Costa Rica so it could coordinate and manage the .cr .cr domain name hierarchy.

Nowadays, TLDs are managed and assigned according to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ( ICANN ) policies and the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority ( IANA ) is in charge of managing the IP addresses. These policies guarantee that the assignation of the .cr domains process is unbiased and equitable.

The National Academy of Sciences, is the entity that provides the registration of .cr domain names through its branch office NIC - Internet Costa Rica.
